    Frictional effects on the dynamic responses of gear systems and the diagnostics of tooth breakages

    To develop accurate diagnostic techniques, this study examines the dynamic responses of spur gear transmission system with including frictional effects on a tooth mesh process. An 8-degree-of-freedom model is developed to include the effects of supporting bearings, a driving motor and a loading system. Moreover, it takes into account not only the time-varying stiffness, but also the time-varying forces and moments due to the frictional effect. The latter causes additional vibration responses in the direction of the off-line-of-action (OLOA). To show the quantitative effect of the friction, vibration responses are simulated under different friction coefficients. It shows that an increase in friction coefficient value causes a nearly linear increase in the vibration features of diagnostics. However, features from torsional responses and the principal responses in the line-of-action show less changes in the vibration level, whereas the most significant increasing is in the OLOA direction. Furthermore, the spectral peaks at the rotational and sideband frequencies are influenced significantly by small breakage defects, especially when the friction effect is taken into account. In addition, the second and third harmonics of the mesh frequency are more influenced than the first harmonic component for all motions, which can be effective features for both indicating lubrication deterioration and improving conventional diagnostic features

    Ab initio studies of electronic structure of defects in PbTe

    Understanding the detailed electronic structure of deep defect states in narrow band-gap semiconductors has been a challenging problem. Recently, self-consistent ab initio calculations within density functional theory (DFT) using supercell models have been successful in tackling this problem. In this paper, we carry out such calculations in PbTe, a well-known narrow band-gap semiconductor, for a large class of defects: cationic and anionic substitutional impurities of different valence, and cationic and anionic vacancies. For the cationic defects, we study a series of compounds RPb2n-1Te2n, where R is vacancy or monovalent, divalent, or trivalent atom; for the anionic defects, we study compounds MPb2nTe2n-1, where M is vacancy, S, Se or I. We find that the density of states (DOS) near the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band get significantly modified for most of these defects. This suggests that the transport properties of PbTe in the presence of impurities can not be interpreted by simple carrier doping concepts, confirming such ideas developed from qualitative and semi-quantitative arguments

    Lessons learned and lessons missed: impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on all-cause mortality in 40 industrialised countries and US states prior to mass vaccination [version 2; peer review: 2 approved]

    Background: Industrialised countries had varied responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, which may lead to different death tolls from COVID-19 and other diseases. Methods: We applied an ensemble of 16 Bayesian probabilistic models to vital statistics data to estimate the number of weekly deaths if the pandemic had not occurred for 40 industrialised countries and US states from mid-February 2020 through mid-February 2021. We subtracted these estimates from the actual number of deaths to calculate the impacts of the pandemic on all-cause mortality. Results: Over this year, there were 1,410,300 (95% credible interval 1,267,600-1,579,200) excess deaths in these countries, equivalent to a 15% (14-17) increase, and 141 (127-158) additional deaths per 100,000 people. In Iceland, Australia and New Zealand, mortality was lower than would be expected in the absence of the pandemic, while South Korea and Norway experienced no detectable change. The USA, Czechia, Slovakia and Poland experienced >20% higher mortality. Within the USA, Hawaii experienced no detectable change in mortality and Maine a 5% increase, contrasting with New Jersey, Arizona, Mississippi, Texas, California, Louisiana and New York which experienced >25% higher mortality. Mid-February to the end of May 2020 accounted for over half of excess deaths in Scotland, Spain, England and Wales, Canada, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Cyprus, whereas mid-September 2020 to mid-February 2021 accounted for >90% of excess deaths in Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Latvia, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. In USA, excess deaths in the northeast were driven mainly by the first wave, in southern and southwestern states by the summer wave, and in the northern plains by the post-September period. Conclusions: Prior to widespread vaccine-acquired immunity, minimising the overall death toll of the pandemic requires policies and non-pharmaceutical interventions that delay and reduce infections, effective treatments for infected patients, and mechanisms to continue routine health care

    Photocatalytic removal of phenol over mesoporous ZnO/TiO2 composites

    A series of mesoporous ZnO/TiO2 composites were successfully synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactant. The composites of different Zn:Ti molar ratios (0.5:1, 0.75:1, and 1:1) were prepared by impregnating ZnO onto mesoporous TiO2. XRD results verified co-existence of both anatase TiO2 and hexagonal wurtzite ZnO in the ZnO/TiO2 composites. Based on the Tauc plots, all the composites showed almost the same band gap energy of approximately 3.21 eV. The fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results successful covering of ZnO on the surface of the TiO2 as the hydrophilicity property of TiO2 decreased remarkably with the loading of ZnO in the composites. N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms of the samples exhibited type-IV isotherm with a hysteresis loop. The Barrett-Joyner-Halenda pore size distribution revealed that the average pore size of the composites was around 3.6 nm, indicating the formation of mesopores dominantly in the samples. The photocatalytic removal of phenol over the samples under UV light irradiation after 3 h decreased in the order: ZnO/TiO2 composites > anatase TiO2 (with surfactant) > anatase TiO2 (without surfactant) > ZnO. The composite with Zn:Ti molar ratio of 0.75:1 has achieved the highest photocatalytic activity of 36.5% in the removal of phenol under UV light irradiation for 3 h

    Can disordered mobile phone use be considered a behavioral addiction? An update on current evidence and a comprehensive model for future research

    Despite the many positive outcomes, excessive mobile phone use is now often associated with potentially harmful and/or disturbing behaviors (e.g., symptoms of deregulated use, negative impact on various aspects of daily life such as relationship problems, and work intrusion). Problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) has generally been considered as a behavioral addiction that shares many features with more established drug addictions. In light of the most recent data, the current paper reviews the validity of the behavioral addiction model when applied to PMPU. On the whole, it is argued that the evidence supporting PMPU as an addictive behavior is scarce. In particular, it lacks studies that definitively show behavioral and neurobiological similarities between mobile phone addiction and other types of legitimate addictive behaviors. Given this context, an integrative pathway model is proposed that aims to provide a theoretical framework to guide future research in the field of PMPU.
